Carol DeMarco, chair of the Girls Inc. of Jacksonville board of directors and Jacksonville area mortgage team leader for Regions bank, was recognized for her leadership strengths by Community Connections. DeMarco was honored during the group’s Celebration of Leadership – A Tribute to Excellence dinner.
“This recognition simply confirms what we already know about Carol – she leads with passion and commitment and steps up to any challenge put in front of her,” said Laura Lasko, president and CEO of Girls Inc. of Jacksonville. “Carol represents Girls Inc. and our mission so skillfully, and we are all elated to see her talents appreciated in the community. Carol is smart when making decisions for the organization and bold because she always accepts whatever challenge is given to her.”
Born and raised in the Midwest, DeMarco earned a degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee and moved to Jacksonville in 1997. She and her husband Joe reside in Fernandina Beach.
Girls Inc. of Jacksonville focuses on underserved areas in Jacksonville. It serves more than 1,700 girls every year through after school, summer camps, and outreach programs that build self-confidence, self-esteem and help girls make better life decisions. Every day girls in this community face the burdens of illiteracy, teen pregnancy, violence, abuse and economic and social stereotypes. The Girls Clubs of Jacksonville began as a project of the Pilot Club of Jacksonville, was incorporated in 1970 and became affiliated with the Girls Clubs of America in 1971. In 1990, Girls Clubs changed their name to Girls Incorporated on a national and local level.
Community Connections of Jacksonville, a 501 (c) 3, provides housing for the homeless, child care, parenting classes, after school and summer camp programs, mentoring and GED prep classes among other services for women, children and families.
