The Girls Inc. GIRLStart National Literacy Program is modeled after a very successful literacy/ self-esteem program developed by Girls Inc. of Alameda County. Girls Inc. GIRLStart National Literacy Program is an after-school program designed to increase the literacy skills, self-esteem and success of kindergarten, first grade girls whose academic performance is below grade level.
The goals of the program are:
· Improving girls’ reading ability, with a majority achieving grade-level or higher
· Improving girls’ attitude toward learning, showing an overall improvement in self-esteem and confidence
· Fostering parents’ and guardians’ participation and interest in their daughters’ early school success
GIRLStart National Literacy Program literacy approach begins with the belief that all girls participating in the program can and will learn to read. Moreover, NLP believes that girls learn best when:
· They are in safe, supportive environment that encourages risk-taking
· They are actively engaged in the learning process
· Their learning is meaningful and relevant
· They are immersed in a language-rich environment that encourages interaction
· They are allowed and encouraged to learn at their own pace
· The staff and volunteers demonstrate a love of learning
