Beginning in 2014-15 school year, we focused on delivering Girls Inc. Identity Programs to girls in 6th, 7th and 8th grades through partnering with Duval County Public Middle Schools.
We selected three programs that are all focused on building self-esteem and preventing unhealthy life choices. We meet with girls during health or physical education classes once a week, for a total of 32 weeks over the school year.
The Girls Inc. Identity Programs that we are delivering this year are:
Girls Inc. Friendly PEERsuasion develops the skills of girls ages 11 to 14 to resist pressure to use harmful substances, such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and household chemicals.
Friendly PEERsuasion targets the years during which girls begin to more fully experience and respond to influence and pressure from their peers to participate in risky behaviors. During the program, girls build their knowledge and skills for resisting negative peer pressure and unhealthy ways to respond to stress. Girls learn to identify healthy alternatives to risky behavior and invite peers to join them in acting on their smarter choice. Additionally, participants learn about various legal and illicit substances, responsible use of readily available prescription and over-the-counter medications and supplements, and analyze media messages that glamorize substance use.
Participants also build leadership skills that help them plan and implement substance use prevention activities with groups of younger children ages 6 to 10, thereby reinforcing their own commitment to avoiding substance use.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - School-Connect
Modules 1 - 3
Module 1: Building a Supportive Learning Community helps girls develop important study and organizational skills such as managing their time, building rapport with teachers, participating in class and keeping a planner. Module 1 also begins to introduce Social Emotional Learning (SEL) including the importance of collaboration and active listening.
Module 2: Developing Self-Awareness and Self-Management introduces helpful strategies for deescalating anger and anxiety. Lessons in Module 2 help girls gain an understanding of the impact of their thoughts and habits.
Module 3: Building Relationships and Resolving Conflicts engages girls in interactive activities that take a proactive approach to common Middle School issues like gossip or cyber-bullying. Girls have the opportunity to develop authentic empathy and compassion for their classmates and others.
